現年42歲的博明在麻州大學主修中文，1998至2001年擔任《路透》新聞社記者，2001至2005年轉任《華爾街日報》，期間派駐北京和香港。他做過許多包括環保和貪腐的調查採訪，跑過2003年的SARS疫情，曾獲得亞洲出版業協會（SOPA）新聞獎。

新聞同業形容，博明是一位「熱血澎湃」的記者。博明曾在北京因報導中國大陸的貪腐問題而遭逮捕，他接受美國廣播公司訪問時回憶說，「我那時被一群中國警察圍著，就站在廁所裡，看著我的採訪筆記一頁頁被撕碎，沖進馬桶。」

2005年博明決定投筆從戎，並通過重重考驗，以32歲之齡加入美軍陸戰隊，先後曾派駐伊拉克與阿富汗。博明與川普提名的白宮國家安全顧問佛林熟識。2010年8月他以陸戰隊上尉官階退役後，重返寫作工作，與佛林等合著了「修補情報：讓情報在阿富汗發揮作用的藍圖」報告。
